File Attachment

To send binary files such as pictures or sound files, you will need a program that will encode the binary file into a form that can be transmitted through the modem.

Here you select any attachment you want to include with your message. After you have selected an attachment, the default MIME type is application/octet-stream. This mime type is for common binary files, if you know the type of the file you are attaching then you can select the MIME type in the cycle gadget.

Buttons

Save - Save the changes.
Add - Add a attachment to the message.
Delete - Delete the selected attachment.
Cancel - Cancel all changes.

Air Mail Pro currently supports UUEncode/UUDecode and MIME messages.

Multi purpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME)

MIME is widely used message format for sending messages. A single MIME message can encapsulate many different message types such as image, sound file or HTML document.

When you add files to your message the default format is application/octet-stream. You can change the MIME type by selecting the MIME Type: cycle gadget. If you know the type of file you are sending then select the available MIME type. If you do not know the MIME type then just leave it as the the default.

For example if you are sending a GIF file then the correct MIME type is image/gif and if its a IFF sound then you can use audio/iff. Note that some MIME types are only relevent to the AmigaOS. EG: image/iff, audio/iff, video/anim, video/cdxl unless other plateforms supports Amiga file formats.

Automatic Encoding/Decoding of files

AirMail will automatically encode or decode the files for you will you send and retreive your message(s).

Note: AirMail actually assumes that UUxT and base64 is the program used, UUxT and MIME is a single program that both uuencodes and uudecodes.

AirMail assumes the following formats when decoding and encoding.

UUxt 3.1
Encode 1>uuxt a infile outfile
Decode 1>uuxt x filename

base64 1.0
Encode 1>base64 encode mime infile outfile
Decode 1>base64 decode filename

Automatic Viewing

If a message contains MIME formatted types, Air Mail will try to execute the file using external Helper Programs.

For example: suppose a friend of yours sends you a MIME message that contains a GIF picture. If you have setup the Helper Program for the mime type image/gif then Air Mail will display the GIF picture when you read the message.
